Interview
What is your background?
With my First-class degree from Oxford, I almost inevitably followed the path of chasing a career in the City for several years. But even while working in those giant global law firms, I managed to build up a rewarding connection with property and training for property agents through investing in Letting4Success and Bloomsbury Residential. What started out as a sideline turned into a real passion, so much so that I decided to concentrate fully on my entrepreneurial activities.
What is your most memorable experience / achievement?
Probably the initial period after I left my last job in the City and dedicated myself fully to self-employment. It was a heady blend of excitement, confidence and a little bit of nervousness, which is natural. Like Christopher Columbus, I was leaving a 'safe harbour' and setting sail through the unknown and perilous waters... but like him, I was certain that my three ships would overcome the dangers to reach their goal.
Why do you like about running your own business?
The best thing about self-employment is how going to see the boss involves a mirror! Joking aside, for me it’s the daily challenges and subsequent rewards of being an entrepreneur, they’re tremendously stimulating and exciting. As I experienced in spades in the City, the modern worker spends large part of their day 'in the office' - I decided that I wanted that work to be for myself and the partners I trust and believe in. But we also teach that the self-employed mindset can benefit people still in employment, by inculcating good practices or habits that make them more effective employees and the business more profitable.
What's your tip or gem?
You should always, honestly, genuinely want to learn. Never let your curiosity stagnate; never stop wanting to know about everything that interests you. But while doing that, remember that knowledge and understanding mustn't be compartmentalised - what you pick up in one field or sector can often be profitably applied to another. Through application your knowledge and experience will help to achieve your goals, whether these involve helping others or creating wealth. It applies to anything.
What do you do to have fun?
I'm a proudly well-rounded person. I enjoy the physical challenges of tennis and fitness training, in that a healthy and sharp body provides focus and confidence in your work too. I also indulge in artistic pleasures at quite a high level - I've played classical piano since I was 3 years old, and I write quite a bit of poetry and prose for my own satisfaction. That's all in addition to the 'fun' of running successful businesses, of course!
