SMEs Boosting Employees' Skills
Businesses are prioritising employee development over hiring for the year ahead, research has found.
82% of HR professionals said they consider employee development to be a bigger priority for their organisation in 2011, compared to just 18% who felt recruitment is going to be more important, according to a 144-strong survey by talent management platform Taleo.
In addition, 56% of respondents report that employee development and training is perceived as an essential business enabler within their organisation, while 15% say that it is still seen as ‘nice to have’ rather than essential.
When asked to identify what would help their organisation to develop its talent, 27% feel that better visibility of skills gaps would greatly assist them in developing employee talent, while almost as many (25%) would like better visibility of their employees’ existing skills.
Chris Phillips, vice president of international marketing at Taleo, said: “As businesses expand globally, talent mobility requirements make the ability to develop skills from within your existing workforce an imperative in any successful business strategy.”
