Deposits Withheld As Landlords Cover Cleaning Costs

A recent report has shown that landlords, whilst attempting to renovate properties after tenants have reached the end of their stay, have made cleaning costs the most popular reason for withholding deposits.

Mydeposits examined the trend, showing that cleaning costs topped the reasons, with unpaid rent coming after it. In the poll, 78% of the landlords asked cited cleaning costs as their primary reason for withholding deposits. However, the chairman of the Residential Landlords Association, Alan Ward, said that this could be easily avoided.

Mr Ward stated that such disagreements could be evaded if tenants simply took care of the property.

However, the expert believes that tenants do not take interest in the proper rules of renting. He explained, "They are blithe about it - the whole process. When they go to the landlord, they don't ask the previous tenants how they've been treated and they don't ask the landlord if they are accredited."

If the tenants were to look ahead and keep the property in good order, along with ensuring their landlord’s credibility, then such issues would not arise.
