Environmental Sustainability: Landlords and Tenants Need To Work Together
An industry expert has noted that both landlords and tenants need to co-operate and communicate better in order to improve issues relating to sustainability.
Ian Fletcher, Director of Policy at the British Property Federation (BPF) said that there is positive activity in relation to green issues, but both landlords and their tenants should cooperate in order to deliver improved systems and results.
Mr Fletcher noted how recent legislation on environmental issues has not helped the two parties to interact effectively.
"If you look at things like the carbon reduction commitment, it tends to drive each party to their own activities rather than working together to deliver savings," he added.
Large institutional landlords are starting to discuss the issues with their residents, but other firms and individuals within the industry need to follow this example, he observed.
The expert's comments follow the release of a survey from GVA Grimley, which revealed 89% of tenants admitted they are dissatisfied with their landlords and the level of discussion they have with them on green issues.
Rory James MacLaren-Jackson of Property Agency Training highlights the importance of the role of letting agents in advancing the issue of sustainability.
"Many landlords, especially new landlords or those with a single property, may be unaware of issues relating to sustainability and environmental impact. This is where the professional letting agent can assist and educate to ensure both parties know their responsibilities, ensuring better results for individual properties and sustainability nationwide," he commented.
