Tenants Advised To Use An Estate / Letting Agent

Dominic Preston, barrister and housing law specialist at Doughty Street Chambers, has stated that people considering the lettings market for their living needs should seriously consider the services of an estate agent in order to ensure they steer clear of any problems.

The expert said that the single piece of advice he would extend to potential tenants would be that if they are entirely new to the market, it is best for them to use an estate agent.

He observed that many people are enthusiastic to begin letting a property, but feel they do not need an agent, believing that they are able to handle all the matters themselves

However, doing so may leave them wasting time and missing out things, when in fact the use of an estate agent could make their move to lettings much more convenient.

Mr Preston continued, clarifying that "firstly an agent will have a contract that is available for you, they will know what certificates are needed, they'll give advice on how to furnish and what's good in that market area.”

The expert said that any individual looking into the market should take this advice, and find a ‘decent, reputable agent’ who will be best able to ply them with the best counsel and insight.

He finished with the statement that "It also gives you the opportunity of 'learning on the job', if that makes sense.”
